I’ve finished a project I’ve been working on for fifteen years. It’s called MOUTH OF A RIVER. It will be released during spring til summer and tonight the first song from it arrives. It’s a three part interconnection album project that I began working on after we made ’bounty’ in 2011. iamamiwhoami was then an experimental temporary project and we had not yet decided on a continuation. I was then newly separated and broken hearted, living in a temporary sublet. I had limited gear to work with, a SM58 mic and a small AKAI midi keyboard, my ears, imagination and voice. I tried to reimagine my solo career. After years of working anonymously with iamamiwhoami I felt isolated, but rebooting gave me this burst of creative flow. I envisioned myself stranded on an island, unreachable but also untouchable and began writing what would become a massive body of work. My confidence in my solo production skills was quite low then as I was still a beginner at electronic music. But also, I had no rules to follow. The illustrator Jan Scharlau (lovingly remembered as SUTS to some) and I met during our ’IN CONCERT’ installation. We became email friends and he came to visualise this project as we worked for over a year on MOAR together. iamamiwhoami then had a continuation and we made ’kin’ in 2012. I set MOUTH OF A RIVER aside. As I moved forward, parts of it shaped my other works, like ’BLUE’, which is built on the conceptual world of MOAR, like a 2.0 version. I thought then I would never return to MOAR. But it stayed with me and I’ve kept working on it between projects since. It grew into three albums that I’ve written, played all instruments on, produced, mixed and mastered. It is a triumf for me to feel confident enough to complete the work the way I saw it in my head. A year ago I began working intently on it and I decided that after all this time, it’s ready.
